Welcome
I'm a principal software engineer who holds a First-class degree in Computer Science with Business Management from the University of Birmingham. I'm currently working as a Principal Engineer II for Smarsh
I have a wealth of experience in the software development industry from small scale websites to software running in the world's largest private hosted cloud and numerous things in between. These days I predominantly work in Java, but I'm not tied to a specific language and am always willing to use something different if it's the right tool for the job.
I am adept at working on a wide range of software projects including modern microservice based architectures as well as legacy projects with huge codebases and many of the issues that commonly come with such projects. With any project I'm involved in, I appreciate and contribute to good design and architecture leading to clean, re-usable and testable code.
I'm experienced in agile methodologies and have been Scrum Master for a number of teams in my development career. I'm experienced in working with all levels of an organisation, from discussions and planning with project managers and non-technical stakeholders through to training junior members of the team.
My current role at Smarsh sees me taking part in developing and architecting parts of the Enterprise Archive system that helps some of the largest financial institutions in the world meet their compliance and regulatory requirements.
In my tenure at Smarsh, I have also held the position of Chief Architect for Digital Safe, overseeing the direction of the suite of products and providing architectural guidance to teams around the world.
Tools and technologies I use include:
Away from work I have a keen interest in technology generally, as may be expected! I'm currently into home automation so if it can be automated in the home I probably have it (or want it!).
Aside from technology, I'm most definitely a foodie. You'll often find me eating out with friends trying new places or falling back to a trusty curry! I also enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes.
I also thoroughly enjoy anything related to driving. I've done numerous driving experiences including rallying, skid pans and driving the amazing Ariel Atom. I see driving as a skill and am proud to have completed my IAM Advanced Driving test.
I believe in giving back to the community so am a founder member of Bishop's Stortford and Stansted Round Table. I've held several roles in the organisation including Treasurer, Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman. As part of this, other than having a great time, we've raised tens of thousands of pounds for local charities and causes from events such as our Real Ale and Craft Gin festival and our Christmas Santa Sleigh collections.
